I’m going vegan!

Have you heard? Oprah is considering becoming vegan! I have been a vegetarian my whole life, but have only recently made attempts at going vegan. Her inspiration to do so is a book she is reading called Quantum Wellness. The most important pillar of wellness on a physical, emotional and spiritual level is to eat consciously, according to its author, Kathy Freston. Not to mention the environmental and animal rights benefits! I'm going to read this book and commit to becoming vegan for good this time. Who's with me?

Who is living their life by The Law of Attraction? After watching Esther Hicks speak of our emotional guidance systems in the original version of The Secret and learning about The Law of Attraction, my life has gotten progressively more magical. These tools are exquisite for living a joyful life and creating a wonderful universe and can be very powerful for developing artists!

Ansuya,

I cannot express what I felt when I saw you perform this past Saturday at Raqs America, especially your second dance, when you were in the backbend on your knees and moving forward in that position. I was in literal shock. And, to have the privilege to take a sword class with you was a bonus!! Thanks for being so kind! I look forward to your emails re the online classes!! Happy Shimmies!!

Ansuya-style headband

Has anyone ever tried making a cabaret headband similar to Ansuya's? Usually I just wrap some fabric around my head for a headband, but now I want to try something a little more structured that I can add coins and beads too. Was thinking of cutting a pattern out of buckram (firm but still flexible), covering with fabric and then adding decorations, attaching with elastic. Has anyone else made a cabaret headpiece and have some tips to share?

Hello, hello! Bringing you some updates for this weekend's Ansuya workshop:

1. Athens has plenty of places to eat BUT catering is available all weekend for the Ansuya workshop. Dondero's International Kitchen will be catering - http://www.donderoskitchen.com . An order form is now available online at www.southernfusion.net - here's the direct link: http://www.southernfusion.net/files/Donderos_Pre_Order_Form.pdf

Food must be pre-ordered by March 13th - you can call, email, or fax your order directly to Dondero's (don't send it to me or Fatina!) and payment is expected at the time of the order. The food will be delivered to the seminar location at no extra charge.

2. Just a reminder - online registration for the Ansuya workshop will end Friday morning. Registration will be an additional $10 at the door, space permitting.

Thanks!

Kosmos Music & Dance Camp, June 5th-8th...

14 dancers, 9 meals, nightly performances, Redwoods!

June 5th-8th, 2008

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures. And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River. The site is has groves of redwoods, madrones, firs and oak trees. Aquatic types will enjoy lounging by the pool. All meals are provided by our professional chef, the popular Siam Moeini, and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the open-air amphitheatre, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

Techno Touches Workshop - video?

I could not think of a better way to spend a day in San Francisco than to take a dance workshop with the beautiful Ansuya. What an amazing woman - talented beyond belief and completely real. I was greeted with such genuine affection and enthusiasm, that I shared right back with her. We were there to learn Techno Touches - a super cute choreography by Ansuya. She taught us with patience and humor - I love to laugh in a workshop - it means we're having fun - and thats exactly what we had.
Thank you and Big Love and Respect to you Ansuya -

I only regret not being able to get my camera to work so I could get a video of the choreography to refer to.
Did anyone get one?
If so - please post a link - I'm having trouble remembering exactly how a couple of moves go.....

Enchanted Wishes....................... )O(

Magical Ansuya

We at the L.A workshop got super lucky- Ansuya performed in full costume at the end of her two day seminar! [I believe she will also be performing in SF] and, ofcourse, SHE ROCKED! Im so glad she decided to perform! [as you can tell by my excessive use of exclamation points]

This is my question: when [and its ONLY a question of when] Ansuya teaches her comprehensive again in L.A -will it be slightly different, and if it is, will the option of just taking one or two days of it be available? [just need to get my Ansuya fix]

Also, I will not relent on Ansuya's book, It can be called, 'The Zen of Ansuya' cause i think she's kind of a dance zen master.

Well, thats my Ansuya rant-anyone care to join in? ;D
Please tell me as soon as possible if this is true!
I signed up for November's comprehensive, but might have to cancel. If she's teaching there in Feb., that would really be awesome so I could atleast still go!

If she is teaching in Feb. in Hawaii, what's the topic?

Thanks so much,
Ansuya Rathor glides to the center of Bha! Bha! in a rustle of beads and chiffon. She strikes a dramatic pose on the makeshift dance floor, waiting for her music to begin.

She looks like the archetypal belly dancer: long, coffee-colored hair, eyes exaggerated with thick, black eyeliner. Above her eyebrows she’s painted an arch of black dots, mimicking a Eastern facial tattoo. Between her eyes is a bindi: In her case, a decorative nod to Hindu culture. And in a sparkling costume in red, blue and gold, the slender belly dancer looks like an exotic Wonder Woman readying herself for combat.

The first notes of an exuberant Middle Eastern song fill the room and Ansuya’s hips begin to shake ferociously. Her body breaks down into separately moving spheres, stomach rolling in exaggerated waves, hips bouncing sharply from side to side as if ricocheting off invisible objects. Her face alternates between joy and almost painful concentration as her fingers clap out a percussive double-time on the tiny brass cymbals strapped to her fingers.

Dinner stops as the roughly 20 diners, clapping in time to the infectious rhythm, watch her. As she works, Ansuya looks everyone directly in the eye and some people look away, uncomfortable in the intensity of her gaze.

At a round table off to one side of the restaurant, a petite woman with long gray hair and a silver nose stud the size of a freckle watches. Janaeni Rathor, Ansuya’s mother, lets loose a “lalalalala” that sounds like the call of an incensed songbird. The ululation, known as zaghareet, catches the dancer’s attention, and Ansuya looks over. She flashes her mother a quick smile before twirling off.

Although the diners at the North Naples Persian restaurant don’t know it, this is a very special performance. It’s Ansuya’s first local appearance since she and Janaeni, also a professional belly dancer, moved to Naples from Miami on Aug. 1. Together the two women represent a belly-dance dynasty that has stretched nearly 50 years, from the theaters of Japan to the Lollapalooza stage. You may not know her name, but Janaeni was one of the first American women to popularize belly dancing in the 1960s.

Now, it’s Ansuya who carries on her mother’s legacy, crafting a reputation as one of the art form’s most revered dancers.

“When you connect to the music,” she says of her work, “your job is just to go along for the ride.”

---

Ansuya came to belly dancing very young, taking the stage in the “artsy, hippie” town of Ojai, Calif., at age 4.

“She was in the studio from the beginning,” recalls Janaeni. “Even when she was a babe in arms, her father would carry her.”

“She put me in the advanced class when I was a kid,” Ansuya remembers. Wandering between her mother’s students and imitating their graceful moves and isolations, Ansuya first absorbed belly dancing in the same way her mother had, by watching.

But while Ansuya was born into it, Janaeni stumbled upon it by mistake.

Living in Oakland, Calif., in the early 1960s, Janaeni met some Lebanese boys while waiting in line for a movie one evening. When she and a friend accompanied them to a party at a local college’s international student union, Janaeni had her first encounter with belly dancing, watching a woman perform for the crowd.

“I had no name for it,” Janaeni remembers of her first reaction. “I had finally seen on the outside everything that I’d been feeling on the inside.” She was 16 years old.

When she finished high school a year later, Janaeni packed her bags and moved to New York City where, despite her blond hair, blue eyes and skinny frame, she found work dancing alongside professional Greek, Turkish and Middle Eastern belly dancers at a Greek nightclub.

“No one was political,” Janaeni says of the thriving belly dance scene in New York. “Everything was a beautiful blend. It was like curry.”

She retired 14 years ago at 48. Now she watches her daughter work.

---

Clean-faced and calm, Ansuya, 31, sits at the wooden dining room table in the East Naples home she shares with her mother. The room smells of scented candles and fresh air. The sound of running water from a pool in the backyard mixes with soft music drifting from a hidden stereo.

Although they’ve only lived there for a month, Ansuya and Janaeni’s home is filled already with souvenirs from their travels. A basket in the dining room overflows with juicy-looking oranges. Three thick paprika candles sit on tall bejeweled pillars by the door. Instead of couches, two high-backed daybeds in the living room are strewn with shiny pillows in rich turquoise, purple and magenta tones. Wearing a swinging pink skirt and a bright pink top that reveals an enviably flat stomach, Ansuya adds another shade to the already colorful space.

“I need to have lots of pillows,” Ansuya says, laughing at her own eccentricity. The beds, she adds, are for lounging like a goddess. In a belly dancer’s home, it’s all about creating a sensual environment.

Ansuya uses the word “sensual” a lot. Not just about belly dancing, an art form that celebrates and showcases female sexuality, but about nearly everything around in her world. Costumes, music, relationships: They’re all meant to be touched and explored.

“Live colorfully,” she says. “It’s not cream and taupe and beige; it’s red and purple together.”

For Ansuya, belly dancing has always been more of a lifestyle than a genre of dance. The emotions, strength and grace of belly dancing go beyond the classroom or the stage, she explains, and seep into all arenas of a dancer’s life. For Janaeni and Ansuya, this has proved especially true.

“The mother-daughter connection with belly dancing is really dreamy,” Ansuya gushes.

“For me, I get to live twice when I watch her dance,” says Janaeni, a smile stretching across her face. “She’s taken my work and evolved it way beyond I could have because my time ran out.”

Within the belly dance world, Ansuya is, as Janaeni was in her time, an innovator. Known for her mastery of both technique and interpretation, Ansuya has developed a style that incorporates moves from the different schools of belly dance — for instance, traditional Egyptian and tribal — and from genres as distinct as flamenco and hip hop.

“I do all of them, because I can’t resist,” she says.

Ansuya’s unique performance has earned her numerous awards, such as the Golden Belly award and the International Academy Middle Eastern Dance’s best cabaret dancer of the year in 2001. To date, she’s appeared in at least 13 instructional and performance DVDs.

“Everyone in the belly dance community knows her,” says Anita Shek, a 26 year-old Naples resident and belly dance instructor known by the stage name Asaya. “She’s one of the biggest superstars.”

In 2003, record producer Miles Copeland made it official when he invited Ansuya to join his elite troupe of belly dancers called the Bellydance Superstars. The group gathered some of the biggest names in American belly dancing to create a show targeted for a mainstream audience. They toured the world from Japan to Spain, even dancing in front of 25,000 people as part of the Lollapalooza tour in the summer of 2003.

“We went on between Jane’s Addiction and Incubus,” Ansuya says, laughing. “Perry Farrell once said, ‘You’re working harder than us.’”

But the sheer intensity of the tour schedule took its toll.

Janaeni remembers frantic phone calls from her daughter from all over the world — Ansuya, lost and lonely.

“Unfed,” Janaeni says, scowling.

“I was on a rock tour. That was how it felt,” Ansuya says. “Somewhere along the line I realized, ‘I’m not aligned with what I’m teaching.’”

---

After 10 years on the road teaching, performing and touring, Ansuya is ready to settle down.

“I’ve gotten to a point where my DVDs are doing well and I can actually stay at home for a while.”

“We wanted a quieter, more balanced life,” Janaeni says.

They chose Naples, they say, for the warm weather and the big city sophistication without the big city problems.

But they’re not slowing down. Janaeni and Ansuya have big plans for their new home, like converting their garage into a dance studio and building a stage in their spacious backyard. Janaeni is even considering coming out of retirement to teach a belly dance class for local seniors at the Naples Woman’s Club.

On Sept. 23, Ansuya will begin teaching at the Naples dance studio called Etudes de Ballet. Her workshop, called the Magic of Bellydance, caters to beginners. Over four four-hour sessions, the class will cover various elements of Ansuya’s belly dance lifestyle philosophy, teaching stage makeup, costuming and, of course, dance. The workshop will culminate in a private solo performance from Ansuya herself.

“My goal is to make sure every single woman on the planet knows about belly dancing,” Ansuya says. “I would love to become the Jane Fonda of belly dance.”

---

On the Net

www.ansuya.com

---

A little history

While belly dancing is widely associated with the Middle East, its actual origins have long been a subject of debate. Theories abound regarding its birth and development, some attributing it to religious ceremonies in Egypt or India, others claiming it descended from native folk dances of ancient Middle Eastern tribes.

There is probably no single correct answer to this ongoing question; today’s style of belly dance is fusion of different elements and has its roots in multiple, if not many, places.

I was wondering if anyone knows the name of a photographer that was at the Queen of the Bay competition. He said his name was "Dimsdale" or something similar. I can't remember exactly. Anyway he said he would be posting pictures of the show on his website. Does anyone know his name or his URL.

Olu chose not to dance at the showcases so that she could focus on the run of the shows. She is a selfless, nuturing and beautiful human being. She handled her business with a smile. Lots of Love & Light to Olu!

What I learned from Ansuya during the Comprehensive

I learned a lot, that goes without saying. Now that it's over and I've had a chance to take some personal inventory of my new skills I can honestly say that she has made me a much better dancer. Beyond the physical things that she taught us, balance, posture, poise, and even a little bit of pain, she taught me so much about the person I am on the inside, and how that affects everything around me on the outside. For those of you that have never met this wonderful woman in person, I can sum her up in one word - REAL. That's from the moment you step into the room with your classmates, to anytime you have one on one time with her, the woman says what she means and means what she says. I found it completely refreshing to be able to study with someone who truly cares about your personal journey, and takes interest in that journey, even if just for a minute or two at a time. Her words of encouragement were honest and genuine, and I found myself practicing extra hours just so I could give her more, since she gave all of us so much everytime. She taught me patience, and strength, and the ability to push myself ever forward, even through some uncomfortable obstacles. She taught us with humor, compassion, and an ever present passion for life and this art form. Her views on feminine empowerment hit so close to home, I found myself reading her "VIsion" over and over, and nearly every time I did, I ended up in tears. The most important thing I learned was that there is room for everyone in this dance, there is room for the traditional, the not so traditional, and everyone in between. It's not the danceform that sets limits, it's small minded people. True sisterhood exists within us all. We have the power to reach out to our communities and make real lasting friendships and have all kinds of fun while we do it. So I thank you deeply from the bottom of my dirty callused feet, for coming here and making our world a whole lot more beautiful.
I LOVE YOU ANSUYA!!!!

Wow, Ansuya!

I remember when I first started becoming interested in bellydance - almost 10 years ago now! I played in a percussion ensemble, and I saw some lovely (tribal, I now know) bellydancers at an event in Seattle. I lived on an island, and I thought, "If I just save up some money, I can go take a workshop at least, and then I'll know the basics." I wound up in a cabaret class, taught by a woman whose name I cannot remember, and I thought, "Yikes! What have I gotten myself into?!" I was pierced and dreadlocked and not at all into sparkles and big smiles, so the workshop made me a bit confused about bellydance in general.

Eventually I learned about the various styles of bellydance and found Hot Pot Studios, where I've been taking tribal fusion and ATS classes for about a year and a half now. I finally found the style that fit me, and I've also learned to appreciate cabaret dancing despite my fear of sequins. There are some cabaret dancers who really rock my world, and after seeing "American Bellydancer," I've got to say that Ansuya is top of the list. I dig her style, sparkle and all, love her hair and her flowers and her sassy little queen-of-the-world facial expressions.

But I really love her philosophy. Hearing her talk in the documentary made me feel proud to be a bellydance student. So thanks, Ansuya, for curing me of my fear of sparkles and giving me new and interesting reasons to dance! I look forward to (ulp!) braving my next cabaret-style class with you, someday.

Hello Ansuya fans, friends, and students,

I have posted 357 photos from the April and June 2007 Ansuya Salon's in San Francisco (I could not attend May 2007) here in the Ansuya Tribe. These photos were selected from 4681 photos in the collection from both of those nights. Alas, the photo titles are generic for the moment, and there are virtually no descriptions. However, now that the photos are posted, this textual content can be edited in on Tribe somewhat later to amplify context.

In the interim, I hope you may like these photos. The Ansuya Salons were just incredible shows. I had sooo much fun, and just loved all of the dancers I saw and photographed, plus the way cool vendors.

Quite a lot of this content has already shipped out in ultra-high-resolution to various of the lovelies who danced; however, there are a small number of dancers from these shows that I still have to get remaining photo disks out for. Please standby, I'll get to this shortly.

Wish you well.

Blessings and Light,
Michael

Serena Wilson dies, age 73

In a recent issue of Time Magaize(July 9, 1007):

"The fact that belly dancing, an ancient Middle Eastern tradition, is widely known throughout the U.S. is largely due to one woman: choreographer Serena Wilson. In the '60s she opened her renowned New York City studio-among the first in the U.S. to focus exclusively on belly dancing- and over four decades helped bring the rhythmic dancing into the mainstream. To combat it's sexualized image, Wilson barred her dancers from performing at male gatherings(bar mitzvahs included). She was 73 and died from a pulmonary embolism."

There's a small picture of her next to the article in Time Magazine.

She was quite an inspiration!

Amethyst has been bellydancing and planning events and shows in Pittsburgh, PA for 10 years, and teaching for 6 years. She is soon releasing a bellydance electronica DVD "ElectroBelly" with her troupemates.
Her website is www.ElectroBelly.com

Kiore's style of dance brings you a mixture of old world and new. He delights his audience with something seldom seen, the male fun and flirty presence. He's been delighting the audiences of Central Valley for a little over a year and enthusiastically brings a fun performance to you tonight. For more information regarding Kiore email him at embracethemaddness@gmail.com.
Sakina studied American Tribal Bellydance for thirteen years before entering the glittery world of "cabaret". She is learning to bellydance all over again beginning with the Ansuya Comprehensive.

SHANA SUBELSKY
In 2003, Shana began taking belly dance lessons from Jill Parker, director of Ultra Gypsy. She has performed in Ultra Gypsy student shows and in benefit shows. Shana and friends, called Isis, danced at events such as Café Bellie and Girlstock. At Kosmos World Music and Dance Camp, Shana learned from some of the Bay Area’s best dance teachers and performers. You may recognize her from working the door at Ansuya’s student performances! While off the dance floor, Shana is a social worker for children and families in the foster care system. She turns to belly dance for self-care and creative expression.

Tsukuyomi is the name of Japanese god of the moon. She has been flying from Japan to San Francisco on a monthly basis, just to have the opportunity to study with Ansuya. She is an accomplished performer in Japan in the art of bellydance and wants you to know that she really loves Ansuya and has been so affected by her style that she comes here from so far away.

GUEST ARTIST:

Hannah Romanza draws her aesthetic impulse from many years of study in both
Eastern and Western classical dance, infusing Bellydance with architecture,
sculpture and precision with the aim to re-vivify its ancient stature as a
galvanizing performing art for women. A dedicated trail-blazer of Middle
Eastern Dance, her wide range of expertise is rooted in the enchanting forms
of North Africa, the Near East and Central Asia. As a seasoned performer on
the proscenium stage, her irrepressible penchant for pulsation has
enraptured audiences with stylistic variations ranging from her saucy and
vivacious Turkish Rom style to her breathtaking Persian interpretation
infused with delicacy and joyful abandonment. She is founder of the
youth-focused educational program Danceversity World Dance and teaches
regularly at the ODC Dance Commons in San Francisco.

Black Sheep Bellydance is an innovation of Kajira, and now is directed by Seba, one of Ansuya’s students. Their influence and dedication to the art form can be witnessed at many bellydance festivals and beyond. See more about BlackSheep at http://blacksheepb ellydance.com/about/bsbd.html.

Please join us in celebrating the art of bellydance and thanks in advance for your support!!

LISTEN! THIS IS MUY IMPORTANTE!

*THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!**

We *are* going to have the last class at the same place it always was at: The San Francisco Dance Center at 26 Market Street, San Francisco.

I am really sorry for the confusion. The SF Dance Center told us we couldn't have the room, but now we can. Its easier to just keep it there, everyone knows where it is!

If you have any questions, please email me at gina@opulenttemple.org

WE ARE GOING TO HAVE THE LAST CLASS AT 26 7TH STREET, SAME PLACE IT ALWAYS WAS! Class is still 11:30 am to 4:30 pm.

SHOW AT MIGHTY at 119 Utah Street, doors open at 7pm

I'll have fans at the last LA workshop!!

I'll be bringing a poo-ton of fans all available immediately for that class. I'm making some special trips to buy extra as well.

I'll have some weeny "I'm poor and just need something to hold for the class" $2-3 guys, some at about $15 each, some of the bigger demilunes at about $35, and some of the longer ones as well. I've got a bunch of colors, but I HIGHLY suggest showing up early to get the best color selection. Also, in terms of easiest to use, I have enough of those for about one per student (pending extra purchases). If anybody buys pairs, it will affect later purchasers, heads up!

Cash and check accepted. there will be mayhem, Oh, yes!!

Also, sign up for the newsletter and info on upcoming fan workshops, plus get your info on the Summer. Fan. BLITZ. starting July 2nd ish. Also, see the HUGE fans (taller than me), the new butterfly fans, and circle fan in person.

anyone have a spare cane for the next SF workshop?

I'm kind of dreading the thought of bringing a cane on the airplane for the next workshop, and was hoping that someone might have an extra one that I could borrow during the workshop(it would be much appreciated!)

If there are 2 spare canes available, that would be even better. My friend Amethyst has her own cane, but it would be nice if we could each borrow one, or share one.

Good luck to everyone who's performing in June :)

Thanks!!

O.K. this is a very important post!! ha.....does anyone know what brands carry the felt tip eyeliner. I would like to try it. I use MAC eyeliner, but it's a gel like substance in a little pot and I use a brush, I've gotten pretty good at using it, but, hey if there is an easier way or maybe more dramatic, I'm game. And, could someone advise me about whether to use black or dark brown. I really want to shine this weekend, and I need makeup tips. (although I am an ole pro at it since I've been applying it for years) oh, and I almost forgot, are the little sequins that u put on the corners of yours eyes easy to find?.....thanks a bunch.
