Hi everybody. :)
I just needed to write it out *somewhere* that using Ansuya's finger cymbals instruction DVD has helped me very quickly in progressing from just being able to bang out some rhythms on the zills alone to actually being able to DANCE at the same time! :D
I've been practicing with the zills intermittently (gotta give the wrists a rest) for several months, but only recently bought some decent Saroyan mastercrafts, sewed the elastic on perfectly, and then practiced to the DVD several times before recording most of it onto an audio tape to practice in my dance/exercise room in front of the mirror. (I don't know how that helps, but indirectly it does somehow.)
After only _three days_ of working at it two hours a day, my feet finally caught up with my fingers and now I can hold the rhythms, move my arms around in different positions, and add simple foot movements and move around the room. I feel like I broke through some kind of barrier. :D (I've done the first three rhythms and will attack the Chiftitelli next.)
So thanks to Ansuya for making such a helpful DVD, and thanks to this tribe for giving me a place to gloat about my progress! ^__^

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tue, August 8, 2006 - 7:59 PMThat's terrific, Gail! Keep up the good work and one of these days I must follow that advice myself. :-) I can't dance and play zills to save my life....yet, that is. -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wed, August 9, 2006 - 11:45 AMOh, I was really frustrated early on in wanting to be able to dance and keep the rhythm, too! I really think it helps to watch the DVD through several times, practicing to it in front of the TV/computer for the visual component, and then once you know you've got it memorized enough, record it onto a tape and use that in front of the mirror with just the audio instruction. I did that a few times, figured I had the three rhythms down well enough, and then practiced them to different songs without any audio instruction. It's probably good to alternate that with reviewing the DVD occasionally, too. And I haven't done the Chiftitelli yet. :)
I also wrote down the rhythm notations on large Post-Its and stuck them at the edge of my large exercise mirror. The counts (1-8), with the downbeats in bold, and then the drum's "doum-tek-a" notes as well. I refer to them if I don't remember exactly or get them mixed up--except the Straight Four; that one's pretty easy. That helped, too! And Solace has a great CD to practice to: Rhythm of the Dance, but I figure probably everyone already knows about that by now. :) -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 3:51 AMThis is wonderful news!!!! I love to hear stories about how people get a "break-through".
I have this DVD too and yes, it is wonderful! I can follow the entire DVD, including the drill, but I can't make any moves of my own without losing the rythm... = (
For example, I can play a straight 4 beat rythm while shimmying. But if I try to layer that shimmy with let's say a chest circle, everything just messes up. So I kind of just gave up. I'm just too impatient and only get angry with myself.
But you have inspirered me now, Gail, I will also practise 2 hours at a time, several days in a row! Hopefully I will hit some kind of break-through too... -

Thu, August 10, 2006 - 11:45 AMJosephine: Don't give up! And yeah, sometimes the longer practice sessions make a difference. It feels like my coordination improves within one session of practice, so the playing of zills improves as well from one half hour to the next.
I've gotten somewhat impatient in the past, but figured I was expecting too much of myself too soon, so decided to just take it one day (or usually one week) at a time and see what happens. What's the hurry, huh? ;)

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 7:55 AMDVD's are great as a step, tool and reminder... BUT the only way to get better is to use the zills everytime you dance. [at least this is what Aisha Ahroosh and Ayesha preach to us students ! Aisha makes us warm up with them and Ayesha class is almost always all with zills on. It was somwhere about a year ago that something just clicked and my hands became able to move independant of my body - for all of you it will come, when.. now that is a different story. I think it is great that some dancers are really trying to get back into them. There are sooooooooooo many "professionals" that can not play at all !
Keep going girls -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 9:36 AMPick a movement to drill and then choose a rhythm to drill to. For variety - or if you have successfully performed the drills to your satisfaction, you could put a couple of drill movements together with the rhythms and practice the transitions between the drills. All it takes is practice, practice, practice. Ansuya didn't pop out of the womb and start zillin' like the zillin' machine she is today. Or maybe she did after being there nine months listening to her Mother play the zills. Idon'tknow.
Ansuya only has one video for zills. I wish she would make another one, in fact I aske her Mother if they would consider it.

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 11:41 AMI'm afraid my wrists would die after a month of dancing with them continuously; they're not that strong after a bad case of tendinitis years ago (still prone to it). But I practice with them when I can, being careful not to overdo it.
When I asked Ansuya back in June why I usually only see about two out of every dozen or so dancers using zills in performance, her simple answer was, "that's because it's harder." I knew that was true, but I figured most dancers would want to learn the zills to use in performance. I haven't performed at all yet -- and most likely won't until I get these things down pat a little better... along with practicing other moves and coordinations I haven't quite "mastered" yet, if ya know what I mean. :) (Not that I expect perfection before stepping onto a stage, but I'd rather feel I have *some* proficiency with it!) -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 6:35 AMGail: I did try the dvd again last night, determined to do it twice and working on adding my own moves to the beledy, bolero and chiftetelli rythm, and I think I DID improve!! I found it much easier to dance to this three rythms, mixing figure 8's, undulations etc. The straight four was a lot harder though, the right hand tends to go absolutely nuts and the left just can't keep up...
The performance that Ansuya gives at the end of the DVD is amazing (as always). But I can't even make out which different rythms that she's playing... = (

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 4:23 PMJosephine: Don't try to heap too much on yourself too soon. I started out learning these things pretty slowly at first, took a few breaks, and then got back into it at a leisurely pace until immersing myself into it just recently and somehow some things just *clicked* last weekend.
I find the Straight Four a little harder in some respects as well, probably because of the repetitiveness. I prefer rhythms with some variance and variety. And I know what you mean about the right hand feeling more energetic and coordinated; I'm right-handed... you must be, too? I just tried to remember my piano training, wherein the left hand is always doing something different than the right. (Maybe that's why the straight four seems harder!) I've wondered if it wouldn't be a good idea to try doing it "left-handed" for awhile to give the left side more of a workout and let it catch up to the other side.
On the DVD, I think Ansuya gives a brief introduction before the performance (or at some point), saying that the rhythms progress the same way they do in the instruction and the drills, but I'd have to watch that part of it again to be sure. I don't remember there being any long pauses between the transitions so that probably makes identification for *newbies* a little more difficult. ;) But I agree. Great performance!

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 4:47 PMJosephine, I emailed Ansuya that same question, "What rhythm's are you playing when you dance at the end of that dvd?" Her mother replied that Ansuya improvs when she dances so she couldn't say what specific rhythm she uses. So I copied the video to tape cassette and listened to it when I was driving. From my point of view she plays to the rhythm of the song, some singles and some triplets. As you improve with using your zills and remembering the different rhythms, you will hear how Ansuya plays while watching... it's hard though because watching her dance is so mesmerizing. -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, August 12, 2006 - 3:06 AMThanks Julie, for this information! Wow, just thinking about improvising both the zill playing and dancing at the same time makes me dizzy.... I have both of the songs - which are great by the way, especially "Sendur" - on cd and I've tried to play to them. It sounds nothing like Ansuyas rythms, I can tell you that, LOL!
But I'll keep practising, taking baby-steps this time... waiting patiently for that click.

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, August 19, 2006 - 11:24 AMI just listened/watched the performance again. Isn't she playing mostly the straight four rythm in the Sendur part? With some chiftetellis in the slow, emotional part of the song. -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mon, August 21, 2006 - 7:43 AMStraight four - yeah, (I called them triplets)1234, 123 123 123 123, some singles and maybe chiftetellis but I'm not sure... I have to view the dvd again. It sounded to me like she was playing the melody. Can you tell me how you figure she was playing chiftetelli at some point in the song? -
-
Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mon, August 21, 2006 - 11:24 AMStrangely enough I find singles hard to play! It sounds like It should be the easiest but it's not.... at least not at tempo. The chiftetellis are in the slow part of Sendur. (Sendur is the second song). When the slow part suddenly begins she stops playing the zills and makes some slow and emotional moves, verticle chest circles and so. Then, half way into the slow part she plays four chiftetellis. (fast) After that the slow music goes on for a couple of beats and then the triplets/tempo begins again.
I hope you understand, English is not my native language and sometimes its hard for me to explain. -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, August 12, 2006 - 11:05 AMI think it's the same one. There are two different covers even at that page. Maybe one cover was earlier and they decided to use the other one for later copies. I don't know why, except that in the second one, she's holding up the zills closer to eye level and above rather than at the middle of her body. -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mon, August 21, 2006 - 12:09 PMHello there! It is so great to hear that you are all experiencing progress with your finger cymbal playing with the help of my DVD. That makes me very happy!
To answer some of your questions: The DVD is called Finger Cymbals with Ansuya and it is available on my website at www.ansuya.com. It's the only one I have out on finger cymbals right now. There is another one in the works for advanced playing. I will keep you all posted as to its release!
The rhythms I am playing in the performance are improvised. I usually respond to the music with a blend of the main rhythm and singles according to how the music makes me feel. This blending creates a variety of unplanned variations. I will go into how to perfect finger cymbal improvisation in the upcoming advanced DVD!
For those of you who are wondering, I accept credit cards at my site now for your convenience. There are many more DVD's in additional subjects available, so take a look and enjoy!

Sat, September 9, 2006 - 3:34 PMAnsuya: Ooooh, an advanced zills DVD? Cool. :D Maybe by the time it's available I'll be ready for it. :)
Also, the thing about improvising: except for learning the patterns and practicing, improvisation is really the only way I know how to do it right now, although I haven't yet tried to actually *choreograph* a routine with zills. I hope to keep it that way because I also just listen to the music and adjust the rhythm, etc., accordingly. It seems more fun that way ... to just dance "in the moment." Of course, yeah, that only works for dancing solo.
Thanks for a great DVD, and I'm glad you now accept credit cards. I gots me some BUYIN' to do! ;)
Love,
Gail
p.s.: I hope you found that earring (at Amira -- back in June)! -

Re: zills: amazing improvement via Ansuya's DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, July 10, 2009 - 2:01 PMreally, the only thing that works is practice, lots of it. when I was laid up after my car accident, my only entertainment activity while recovering was zilling along with dvds. I worked through both the first and second of ansuya's dvds while laid up on my sofa. It was so helpful to just get my hands up to the speed I wanted. After almost 3 months of sofa time, my fingers got really fast. Adding in the footwork once the zills had become "automatic" and I no longer have to think about the patterns was actually really easy.
so just start at a slow speed until it is really comfortable, then try a little faster. There is no shortcut to practice, just time at rehearsal. -
