Has anyone ever tried making a cabaret headband similar to Ansuya's? Usually I just wrap some fabric around my head for a headband, but now I want to try something a little more structured that I can add coins and beads too. Was thinking of cutting a pattern out of buckram (firm but still flexible), covering with fabric and then adding decorations, attaching with elastic. Has anyone else made a cabaret headpiece and have some tips to share?

Re: Ansuya-style headband
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 9:07 AMI am interested in doing this too. I've purchased the supplies, but haven't started yet.
The best tip I've read so far is to use jean denim inside your fabric covering for a really sturdy base.
I also thought sewing long strips of elastic on both sides of the headband would allow you to adjust the fit - waiting until everything you want is sewn on so you account for the weight.
Post photos when you are done!

Re: Ansuya-style headband
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 10:43 AMI forgot to mention one other thing. I bought The Magic of Bellydance by Ansuya and watched part of it during my lunch break just yesterday. After she put her headband on she just tucked the flower into the band.
It seems like you'd need to tack it down or secure it, but Ansuya -according to her DVD - doesn't do that. -

There is a thread in the DIY/Bellydance on a Budget tribe called "headband bases" that have some new ideas.

Re: Ansuya-style headband
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 12:56 PMI have a headband that Tahiya made to go with a costume she made me and it looks awesome. It's just a piece of elastic attached to a piece of upholstry-style fabric. She put some beaded trim on that and put a sequined applique on that. (Tahiya made some of Ansuya's stuff). I will try to post some detailed pics so you can see how she did it.
As for the flowers, I have tried it and it does work to just stivk it in there, as long as your headband/ scarf is tight enough. :-)
